Maine Project Learning Tree (PLT) Coordinator
The Maine TREE Foundation is hiring a Coordinator for Project Learning Tree, a nationwide environmental education curriculum for youth in grades K-12. The Maine TREE Foundation is an independent, private, non-profit organization with a focus on Maine’s forests. The mission of the Maine TREE Foundation is to educate and advocate for the sustainable use of the forest and the ecological, economic, and social health of Maine’s forest community.
Project Learning Tree is a nationwide program whose mission advances environmental literacy and promotes stewardship through excellence in environmental education, professional development, and curriculum resources that use trees and forests as windows on the world.
The Foundation is seeking a Project Learning Tree Coordinator to support this mission and effectively work with other Maine TREE staff and a broad range of outside constituencies.
The PLT Coordinator works to expand the Maine TREE Foundation’s capacity in meeting the growing demand in Maine from schools, teachers, parents, students and other non-profit organizations for outdoor environmental education programs. The Coordinator develops and supports a network of qualified PLT facilitators, and designs, delivers and evaluates professional development opportunities for educators. The Coordinator works closely with the lead scientist of the Holt Research Forest, a 300 acre oak-pine forest in Arrowsic, which is owned by the Maine TREE Foundation
Key constituents of the PLT Coordinator include:
- Pre-K-12 Teachers throughout the State of Maine;
- College & university education and forestry professors;
- Community leaders;
- Holt Research Forest Lead Scientist;
- Forest landowners, both corporate and private;
- Land Trusts, science centers, summer camps and others offering education programs and outdoor classroom opportunities;
The Project Learning Tree Coordinator initiates, supervises and promotes PLT activities in Maine, and helps to guide and support the development and implementation of new research and outdoor education programs at the Maine TREE Foundation. The Coordinator:
- Maintains a working relationship with national PLT staff in Washington DC.
- Serves as liaison to the national office and works cooperatively on joint projects.
- Collects, promotes, and shares success stories in support of PLT.
- Recruits, trains, and manages a network of qualified PLT workshop facilitators.
- Designs, delivers, and evaluates professional development for PLT facilitators.
- Reviews and approves PLT workshop proposals.
- Manages workshop materials; markets and promotes workshops through press releases, mailings, flyers and social media.
- Works with the Maine PLT Steering Committee to provide strategic vision and leadership to meet the needs of the program.
- Prepares and implements long range strategic plans and associated annual work plans and annual operating budgets.
- Raises a portion of funds to support specific needs of the program.
- Assists in organizing two summer Forests of Maine Teachers’ Tours.
- Coordinates, designs and delivers scientific inquiry and standards-based Forest Inventory Growth (FIG) activities for middle/ high school teachers and students, outdoor classrooms and land trusts.
The Coordinator accomplishes these goals through:
- Close collaboration with the Executive Director of the Maine TREE Foundation;
- Close collaboration with the Holt Research Forest lead scientist;
- Close collaboration with the PLT Steering Committee and National PLT staff;
- Fostering collaboration among key stakeholder groups and organizations.
The successful Project Learning Tree Coordinator candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Education: BA or BS in related field (e.g. education, environmental education, natural resource management, etc.)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ classroom teaching experience, especially in a science or STEM field, is highly preferred.
- Broad understanding of the connections among Maine’s forest ecology, economy and forest-based communities;
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions;
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, and ability to travel, primarily in Maine.
- Strategic leadership skills; ability to lead toward a shared vision; flexibility; adaptability.
- Communication skills with proficiency in writing, speaking, and listening to diverse audiences.
- Project management skills with proficiency in developing, designing, managing, and evaluating programs.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and various social media.
- Fundraising, grant writing and grant management.
- Ability to manage a network of volunteers and partners.
- Ability to design, deliver, and evaluate effective facilitation skills and to model best practices in education.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience. The position will be located at the Maine TREE Foundation’s offices at 535 Civic Center Drive in Augusta, Maine.
